Speaking at the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator Summit (GESDA) 2025, IFIT’s Founder and Executive Director, Mark Freeman, contributed to the panel discussion “Rewiring Diplomacy: What Happens When AI Joins the Foreign Service?”

AI is quietly transforming diplomacy, from how diplomats gather information and assess risks to how they train, negotiate, and respond in real time.

While recognising the great capabilities that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Gemini and others offer to mediators and practitioners working in conflict resolution, Freeman addressed the pressing need and opportunity to adjust their “system prompts” to avoid them from providing dangerous conflict resolution advice without conducting basic due diligence that any human mediator would consider essential.
