Beyond its major in-country engagements, IFIT also offers strategic advice and conducts periodic research on negotiation and transition issues within and across other country contexts.

Examples include:
- High-level advisory work on peace and reconciliation policy (eg, northeast Nigeria), inclusive democratic transition (eg, Sri Lanka) and alternative forms of legal accountability (eg, El Salvador).
- Comparative research publications on the building blocks for inclusive social contracts in four sets of countries: Colombia and Guatemala; Ukraine and Macedonia; Tunisia and Libya; Sri Lanka and Nepal.
- Published commentary on transition policies in countries such as Guatemala, Iraq, Syria and Libya.
- Cutting-edge research on how transitional justice concepts can be applied to the challenge of preventing and overcoming violent extremism in Somalia, Iraq, Nigeria, Libya, Uganda and Afghanistan.
