Sergio Huesca Villeda
Sergio Huesca Villeda is a Fellow at the Institute for Integrated Transitions (IFIT), where he contributes to projects aimed at strengthening negotiation, peacebuilding, and political transition processes in contexts marked by violence, polarisation, and institutional fragility. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies at Uppsala University as a Rotary Peace Fellow.
Sergio has more than five years of experience in peacebuilding, conflict transformation, violence prevention, negotiation, and development. Before joining IFIT, he completed an internship with the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), where he contributed to the collection, coding, and verification of data on organised violence in Latin America for the programme’s core datasets. His work included analysing sources to document conflict events and dynamics, as well as producing analytical content for the UCDP Encyclopedia. Throughout his career, he has also worked as a consultant on political, social, and socio-environmental conflict analysis, risk and impact assessment, the design of dialogue processes, and capacity-building for the constructive management of conflict. In these areas, he has collaborated with public institutions, companies, civil society organisations, and community actors.
Sergio holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a postgraduate specialisation in Negotiation and the Management of Political and Social Conflicts. His academic research has addressed transitional and restorative justice, including the contribution of Rwanda’s Gacaca courts to reconciliation. His areas of interest include negotiation and mediation, conflict transformation, transitional justice, reconciliation, and the evaluation of peacebuilding and development interventions. His work incorporates human rights, gender, and environmental sustainability perspectives, with particular attention to dignity, recognition, and the meaningful participation of communities.
